Catching the Ball

Master the fundamentals of catching a GAA football. Good catching wins games — learn the correct hand position, footwork and body shape to take the ball cleanly every time.

How to do it

• With a parent or friend • Arms into a Basket shape for a solid catch • Pull the ball to your chest

For Parents & Coaches

01

The W Shape

Bring both thumbs together behind the ball with fingers spread wide, forming a W shape. This gives you the biggest, safest catching surface.

02

Watch It All the Way In

Keep your eyes locked on the ball from the moment it leaves the kicker's foot right until it hits your hands. Never look away early.

03

Move Your Feet

Get your body in line with the ball before it arrives. Active feet make catching much easier — don't wait for the ball to come to you.

04

Pull It Into Your Body

Once the ball hits your hands, pull it firmly into your chest. This protects the ball and prevents a knock-on if you're challenged.
