Crouch Lift / The Pickup

The crouch lift is the technique used in Gaelic Football to pick the ball up from the ground. The player bends low and scoops the ball into their hands — the ball cannot be lifted directly off the ground with the hands.

How to do it

When the ball is on the ground, you can't just grab it — you have to be sneaky! Bend your knees down low, put one foot under the ball and flick it up into your hands. Then you're ready to go!

For Parents & Coaches

01

Bend Your Knees

Get low by bending your knees — don't just lean forward from the waist.

02

Foot Under the Ball

Use your foot to roll or flick the ball up off the ground into your hands.

03

Two Hands Ready

Have both hands open and close to the ground ready to receive the ball cleanly.

04

Stay Balanced

Keep your weight even so you can move quickly as soon as you have possession.

05

Eyes on the Ball

Watch the ball all the way into your hands before looking up to play on.
