Hand Toe (Picking Up the Ball)

In GAA you cannot pick the ball directly off the ground with your hands — you must use your foot to flick it up into your hands. This is called the hand toe, and it's one of the first skills every player must learn.

For Parents & Coaches

01

Approach at an Angle

Come at the ball slightly from the side rather than straight on. This gives you better balance and a cleaner flick.

02

Use the Top of Your Foot

Slide your toe under the ball and flick upward using the top (laces) of your boot. A scooping action lifts the ball cleanly.

03

Keep It Low and Controlled

You don't need a big kick — a small, controlled flick is enough to pop the ball up into your hands. Less is more.

04

Catch With Two Hands

Have both hands ready and waiting to receive the ball as it comes up. Grab it firmly before you move on.
